l’Archiduc: world famous in Belgium

If you’ve never heard about it, l’Archiduc is certainly a place you will not notice when walking in the rue Antoine Dansaert. The original stained glass windows however, hide a stylish art deco bar that is home to many artists and often hosts live jazz concerts. Make sure you pop in for a drink and be lucky enough to do so when some musicians are giving away a live performance!

Discovering Brussels: le Sablon

Although we visited Brussels before, never had we been able to really find our way around in this capital, that so much seems to exist of many different villages simply collated together. Yes, we found the Grote Markt and yes, the many tourist shops were hard not to miss. But it took a couple of friends to take us to the second level.

We started at the rue Antoine Dansaert, one of the hippest streets of Brussels characterised by its many fashion shops, among which Stijl - a shop that carries Belgian designers such as Ann Demeulemeester and Dries Van Noten. Next, we stopped for a quick lunch at the Place Sainte Cathérine. There you find Mer du Nord, a fish shop that started an outdoor buffet - just for fun, but it rapidly turned out to be a smart move, judging the many people waiting for one of the simple yet tasty dishes such as scampis a la plancha, the soupe the poisson or the crab burger.

On we went, across the Grote Markt, to le Sablon (or Zavel in Dutch), a trendy neighbourhood with many galeries, chocolatiers and cafés. Simply stroll around, along the rue de Rollebeek, the rue des Minimes, the rue des Sablons and absorb the atmosphere.

Stranding one a few terraces and wearing our shoes down on the cobble stones, we were happy to discover that there is more to Brussels than we thought.

Ping Pong

While sushi restaurants are still having a hard time finding their way to the South of the Netherlands (or: to the North of Belgium), London is one step ahead. Invited over for lunch by a friend-of-a-friend, we paid a visit to our first dim sum-only restaurant Ping Pong. And enjoyed every bit(e) of it! From starter, to main course to dessert, all the dishes came as ‘little steamed parcels of deliciousness’. You must go and try them yourself! Make sure you reserve in time, as it is a popular place to go.

A well-informed friend advised me to pay a visit to Cowshed while in London. Good! This mix between a beauty salon and a specialty shop turned out to be a very inspiring spot. Cowshed is offering ‘a stylish range of natural, therapeutic products for the bath and home’. Besides buying products, you can also opt for an on-the-spot treatment. Boutique Aépure

Looking for inspiration, browsing all the new concept stores in Paris for that concept, we also paid a visit to Boutique Aépure. The offering is a wide selection of quality personal care products. The presentation is that of a magazine, with the windows being the cover, teasing you to come in, the isle presentation being the editorial column and the products in the wallracks, presented and ordered nicely by brand being the various articles. Completely in line with the latest trend to provide the visitor with a complete overview of the store on entering, the shop is divided into two different levels, the highest being in the back of the store. Sober shades of white are only broken by the colours of the products, which are shown on piles of paper, again referring to the magazine concept. A fresh and inspiring shopping environment!
